**WARNING! UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS OF THIS** **SYSTEM IS A FEDERAL CRIME!**
OR: Ahhh, are there any sweeter words in the English language?

So, call me a geek, but here is a page of resources for something I'm rather passionate about.  Hacking.  It's an amazing skill and many of the basic punk-rock ethics and attitudes apply.  Anyway..  Here's how I got started.  The file these addresses came from (hackfaq.10) can be read and downloaded in it's entirety from <ftp://www.2600.com/pub/faqs/>.  Some of it is rather dated but a lot of it still applies.  I suggest this as a starting point.  Some of these may not work anymore but they do, to the best of my knowledge, work now.

These guys have been around forever..  A decent site but better as a magazine..
http://www.l0pht.com             (l0pht Heavy Industries)
L0pht is a pretty hard-core group.  L0phtCrack is an excellent cracking utility.

http://www.culddeadcow.com         (cDc Homepage)
The Cult of the Dead Cow are a strange group.  Check out BackOrifice for Windoze.
http://www.defcon.org                            (DefCon)
DefCon is a big annual hacker convention..
http://www.happyhacker.org  (This is an awesome resource)
These folks have set up an entire domain where you are ALLOWED to try to hack their system!  Great for learning UNIX.  They also have links and other resources..

http://www.linux.org       (Alternative operating system)
Linux is a UNIX-based alternative to Windoze for people who don't like to reboot their system every few minutes.  It is freely distributed but it takes a fair amount of computer knowledge to get it running.  I use the Red Hat 5.2 distribution.  There is a rather extensive D.I.Y. theory behind Linux.. It's not for everyone but check this out.

Hey, hey, who isn't interested in good ole Ma Bell..   ;)

More information in here than you'll know what to do with..
http://www.redhat.com     (Premiere Distro of Linux)
This is the homepage for Red Hat Software.  Check it out..
http://www.rootshell.com    (Hacking)
Another decent resource for hacking info.
http://www.iss.net         (Security)
This is a site on securing a network.. Impressive product..
By just poking around in a few of these, you'll find all the resources you could possible want.  It might seem like a daunting task to learn to hack and it is but there are a TON of people out there who want to help..  (There are a lot of dickheads too but you can always ignore them).  I want to give one piece of advice and that is: READ.  Learning this skill, like most any other, requires studying.  If you aren't REALLY into it, it's not worth it.  You just have to read anything you can get you hands (or mouse) on.. Read about UNIX, Linux, C Programming, PERL Programming, shell scripting, server design, the way computers work, the ways to secure your system, different operating systems, WINSocks, Telnet, port assignments, IP addresses, networking, ANYTHING you can get your hands on.  The more you know, the better and information is what hacking is all about to begin with.
As you learn this stuff and look to people for help, please keep in mind that it really isn't about finding the answer in the quickest way possible.  Searching for a way to find an answer yourself will always be a better lesson that having someone show or tell you.  It's about curiosity and knowledge not about destruction or malicious acts.  Don't get me wrong, some places deserve to be digitally curbed but that isn't the primary goal.  Above all, be careful.  People don't like hackers and with out the proper precautions, you can get caught.      -Rion                                                    <vision@newdisorder.com>
